Grief is a regular and normal experience, yet the workplace can be quite an inhospitable environment for those suffering bereavement and loss. There can be many difficult and challenging subjects at work, and bereavement is undoubtedly one of the most difficult.
Whilst many managers will celebrate births and birthdays, and deal with sickness and trauma, when it comes to death, they find it difficult to deal with. The default approach is to leave the employee alone and hope they return to work after a few days, but this deprives people of the essential support they need in times of loss.
Companies and organisations need a much better approach to handling grief. Flexibility around time-off, sensitive managers and open conversations can make a big difference for an employee going through the process of bereavement.
Managers obligations are important too, as traditional support systems weaken, such as the family and faith communities, the workplace has become a significant area where people fulfil their social needs.
Who should attend?
Anyone who works with people, at an HR or managerial level. Or those who work in an environment where bereavement is common, such as a care home.
