Stay cool this summer with our top tips

Summer is most definitely here and recent forecasts suggest the UK is due to get even hotter over the coming weeks! While many of us are enjoying the hot temperatures, extreme weather can also be harmful to your health so it’s important to keep safe during the summer. We’ve put together some top tips on how to stay cool – do share with friends and families!
What are the risks of hot weather?
- Dehydration
- Heat exhaustion
- Headaches
- Heat rash
- Heat stroke
- Sunburn
Who is at greater risk?
- Elderly people
- Babies and children
- Animals
- People who take certain medications
- People who work outdoors
- People who take part in outdoor activities
- People with mobility problems
Tips to survive the hot weather
- Drink plenty of water and eat small meals regularly
- Avoid drinking alcohol and coffee as they can dehydrate you
- Keep windows and curtains closed to stop the sun from shining through
- Avoid going between 11 am – 3 pm as this is the hottest part of the day
- Always carry a bottle of water when travelling
- Wear loose clothes and make sure you put on a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun
- Apply plenty of SPF with UVA protection to stop yourself from burning under the sun
- Enjoy a cold and refreshing shower to cool off
- Make sure your pets stay cool and calm during the heat
- Check up your elderly friends and relatives
The Met Office has issued safety warnings right across the UK about the heatwave. The elderly are most likely to suffer in the heat, so do check up on your elderly friends and relatives to make sure they are OK.
