The Teachers Working Longer Review: Final Report comments that feeling valued, having autonomy and support for well-being are major factors motivating teachers to work longer. As such, they recommend that school management should support teachers and give them control over their work. Other important factors include flexibility of working hours and the use of alternative career paths.
The group recommends that older teachers receive greater recognition and are valued more highly, and that teachers are helped to understand pension arrangements. They would like to see more consistent and effective support for teachers’ well-being throughout their careers. Flexible working should be an option and efforts should be continued to reduce workload.
